Notes

David Lock was born in 1970 and studied Fine Art at the University of Reading and Goldsmiths. Lock had a solo show ‘Fragmented Eros’ at studio 1.1, London in 2018 and is also a recipient of the prestigious Abbey Award at the British School at Rome. His painting El Muniria was selected for the 2018 John Moores Painting Prize, with the Walker Art Gallery acquiring the painting for its permanent collection. His work is in many collections including Soho House. In 2022, he was shortlisted for the Denton’s Art Prize 10.

Lock paints collage-informed reflections of men and masculinities, amalgamating imagery from advertisements and mainstream magazines to create his ‘Misfit’ paintings. Lock seeks to undermine the original source material, disrupting its meaning in order to create a new experimental man, akin to Frankenstein’s monster coupled with queer desire.
